Owning Up to Mistakes with Pearl Moses and Lucinda Soon

During this session we welcomed Pearl Moses, Director and Head of Regulatory Compliance at Setfords Law, and Lucinda Soon, for an engaging fireside conversation exploring how organisations can create cultures where people feel safe to speak up when things go wrong.

Drawing on Pearl's newly published book, Owning Up to Mistakes, the discussion challenged the idea that accountability and compassion are competing priorities. Instead, the speakers demonstrated how organisations achieve the best outcomes when both exist together.

Some of the key themes included:

  • Psychological safety enables better decisions. When people feel able to admit mistakes early, organisations can respond before issues escalate.
  • Leadership behaviours matter. Teams take their cue from how leaders respond when something goes wrong, making compassionate leadership a critical part of effective risk management.
  • Focus on learning, not blame. Reframing mistakes as opportunities to improve systems and processes helps build resilient, high-performing teams.
  • Culture goes beyond policies. Training managers, encouraging early escalation and creating trusted support networks are all essential to embedding psychological safety in practice.

Sustainable performance requires healthy boundaries. The conversation also explored the importance of recovery time, mindful delegation and creating workplaces where people can perform at their best over the long term.

Thank you to Pearl and Lucinda for such an insightful and practical discussion.
