Perfectionism may not be something the Charter speaks to directly, but the Charter is all about removing unnecessary stress in the ways in which we work, and perfectionism can sure cause stress. It is also something that blights the professional and personal lives of so many conscientious people. We have all heard about it, and many of us probably think we suffer from it to some extent from time to time, but what is the difference between an admirable desire to do a great job and an unhealthy obsession with perfection, is there a line, and, if so, where is it?
Roz Shafran is a Professor of Translational Psychology at University College London and also a Director of Bespoke Mental Health, an organisation she founded to help bring the latest proven approaches to treating mental distress into the mainstream of psychological support. She is the author of many books and has a particular expertise in the field of perfectionism. She also speaks about it in a way ordinary folk can understand.
In this session Roz will help us understand what perfectionism is about, and why it is different from that pursuit of excellence we all admire. She will explore where it comes, how to recognise it in ourselves, and perhaps others, and give some practical tools to manage it.
The session will run for an hour – alongside hearing from Roz we will make time for your questions. If there are particular issues you would like discussed, or questions you already have in mind, please do let me know and we can make sure they are covered. This is a subject matter that many of us could benefit from learning more about and so we are opening this up to all employees of member organisations.
