High performing professionals in a variety of sectors often experience mental ill health, stress, anxiety and depression, but can also experience a reluctance to seek support. As their colleagues and friends, we of course want to encourage them to get help. However, this isn’t always easy; we may not know how to approach the subject, and our attempts can even backfire. The distorted thinking caused by depression often makes accessing support seem pointless, or likely to cause them more problems than just carrying on “as normal”.
Dr. Jason T. Siegel has developed a science-based approach to this - looking at what does and doesn’t work, and importantly - why.
In this Insight Session, he will share his findings with us, presenting three key aspects employers and organisations should consider when approaching this issue –
- Processing – what causes the depressed individual to resist help seeking
- Messaging – how we can frame and communicate effective interventions
- Context – How this approach can be best embedded into workplace interactions
Jason will discuss his work with MBC Community Engagement Executive Charlotte Clegg, before opening the floor to discussion with the audience.
We think this session will be relevant to anyone in an organisation who has a wellbeing role, including HR but also Mental Health First Aiders and Mental Health Champions. And while Jason will not be able to give advice on individual cases, it would also be relevant to anyone who is concerned about a colleague, friend or loved one and wants insight into how to encourage them to seek help
