We distribute the MBC Awards at our Annual Event - this year to be held on the 25th of November - make sure we select the worthiest winners by getting your nominations in now!

These awards recognise the efforts of individuals and organisations, and you are welcome to nominate your organisation, or specific people in it for multiple categories.

The categories are as follows:

• Sustained commitment to meaningful change – this would be to organisations that overall we feel have made the most commitment and progress to their MBC related activity during the year
• Contribution to the MBC community – this is a personal award based on contribution over whatever period
• Most innovative new idea – the single most innovative idea from the year – which might be to an individual, a team, an organisation or perhaps a cross member initiative
• MBC Champion of the year – a personal award to someone who has made a real difference in promoting and championing MBC publicly

If you think you, a colleague, your organisation or something you have seen or been involved with deserves to be recognised in any of these categories then please email us (directly, or by using the button below) with details of the category your nomination relates to, who or what you want to nominate and why. You can include supporting documentation, but please ensure that the main body of the nomination is no more than 1000 words.

Please let us have your nominations by the end of September – so you have plenty of time to reflect. Although we will take account of historic activity we are most interested in more recent activity since September 2024. We will also keep a look out for activity we feel deserves consideration but really do want to hear from you, our members, about what you think deserves recognition.

We are keen to hear from any law firms or teams whose people handle emotionally charged or challenging material (eg crime, personal injury, family disputes, medical negligence etc). We'd love to know what measures you have in place to support people and perhaps form a group to share ideas and develop guidance

We were joined by Steven McCann, who shared his personal story of addiction, how that impacted his work and relationships, and how he then overcame that to now be able to help others, sitting on the Steering Committee for This Is Me, the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, and advising law firms, financial institutions and corporates on addiction awareness, mental health and inclusion, helping organisations build recovery-informed, psychologically safe workplace cultures.

Steven also shared practical ways we can look out for others and help if we are concerned about a colleagues wellbeing, and how employers can better support employees at work, at work social events and beyond.

When we look over the members survey, especially the section which asks you to look at your progress there were a couple of areas that a few people highlighted as being a bit tricky.

To help you with those we have listed them below along with some resources that might help.

"We have made performance against the Mindful Business Charter / responsible business a priority standing agenda item for all client and supplier relationship review meetings"

• Harmeston recently provided a session for us that looked at how to include the MBC in client and supplier review meetings that may be of interest, and we also have documents that look at how to start the conversation about MBC with clients, and a review meeting checklist.
• With regards to ensuring responsible business is included in procurement discussions, it may help to watch the Client Voice panel discussion from our recent Members Conference which touches on this topic, along with viewing this suggested email wording for pitches and proposals.

"Our people ask for and provide feedback to others on Charter behaviours on a regular basis"

• Look at the MBC Check in tool, or the MBC Managers toolkit, provided by Osborne Clarke for ideas on how to ensure conversations about the MBC are ongoing.

"We include working hours / availability as part of our email signatures, so people are aware of each others’ working patterns"

• To help look at email use and signatures, it may be useful to watch the Insight Session with Epigram where they gave a case study on implementing the smart meetings and communications pillar. Alternatively, both Lloyds and Mathesons have shared their email etiquette guidance, which may provide some ideas as well.

It may be that you want to speak to us or to the community to get more support to implement the MBC, which is great, and there are a couple of ways you can do that.

• The MBC Forum – where you can ask questions (and help others out with answers!) to all things MBC - so please don't be shy and get involved!
• We also hold drop-in surgery sessions for members, hosted by the executive team, where you are welcome to come along, ask any questions you might have, share where you are not doing as much as you might like to be and work out ideas and solutions.
